Family Friendly Living Rooms Made Easy

When you have a young family it can feel frustrating that you need to design every room of your home around them, but being a parent doesn’t mean you have to forgo everything on your interior design wish list. There’s really no reason why family friendly living rooms can’t be stylish, too!

Trying to create somewhere that is safe for your kids to roam and play, yet comfortable and stylish enough for you to enjoy as well can be a balancing act. But a stylish living room while the kids are young is definitely possible and your living space can be adult and child friendly at the same time. All you need to do is think storage, speed and safety.

With plenty of out of the way storage solutions, your living room can be converted from playroom to adult den in the blink of an eye once the little ones are asleep. Toy boxes and baskets are great for chucking all their toys and games into quickly at the end of the day and they can always double up as toys themselves during the day. There’s also nothing wrong with being unconventional about your storage solutions. Repurpose the furniture you have to hand, and you’ll be creating a family friendly living room that’s not run-of-the-mill.

The living room is the most used room of the house where so many memories are made. Kids love having a designated area to play. Low level coffee tables can double up as a play table during the day. Kids just love messy play and all those play-doh and paint sessions can really take their toll on your furniture. All you need is a protective sheet that can easily be whipped off after they’ve gone to bed and your coffee table will be yours again in an instant.

Make your living room safe for little explorers to roam free by keeping accessories and ornaments up high out of the reach of their tiny, inquisitive hands. Soft corners are a great idea too and soft molded plastic attachments can be easily added to table edges and the like to make sure your little ones are kept safe at all times. It’s a good idea to mount your TV to the wall if possible as well. If your TV sits on a TV stand you can avoid any accidents from curious explorers by anchoring the back of the TV to the wall.

A kid friendly living room needs to be tough enough to stand up to anything your kids may throw at it. Everything needs to be washable from the walls to the surfaces and textiles, that way you can clean up any spills and sticky hand prints quickly and easily with just a baby wipe. There are numerous kid friendly wall paints available on the market that are wipe clean so you can protect your walls from any over enthusiastic artists in the house! If you have the wall space (and the courage!) why not go all out and create a chalkboard wall which will be sure to keep them busy for hours and hours on end? Kids just love to show off their creative side, but if you plan your living room just right then there will be plenty of room for all of you to let your creative flair run free.
